Hello everyone,

Below you will find the details of LAMPsig's February presentation. Sitting might be limited, please RSVP at http://www.meetup.com/LAMPsig/events/48519902/

One of the most popular UNIX shells is bash. At the February meeting of LAMPSIG, we are going to sharpen our bash programming skills, and you are invited. It promises to be a bash you won't want to miss.

Dallas Legan is giving his first presentation for LAMPSIG, an intro to bash shell programming II. This tutorial is recommended for all, with the emphasis on borderline transition from command line to scripting, with plenty of scripting tricks provided for even the diehard bash gurus. Dallas will also point out some differences between bash and ksh. So, bring your pencils and notepads and get ready to learn something.

Kind regards,

Topic:
An Introduction to BASH Scripting

Date & Time:
Saturday, November 19, 2011
1:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Location:
Tom Bradley Youth and Family Center
5213 West Pico Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA 90019

Details:

So you've learned a few Linux commands to get around the system, and unless you explicitly said otherwise during the installation process, you are most likely using the Bourne Again Shell (BASH). BASH offers much more than just typing commands to navigate around the Operating System - almost anything you can do in other basic scripting languages, you can do in BASH. This talk will cover:
- The structure of a BASH script
- Setting and reading variables and arguments
- Loops
- Branches and comparisons
- Piping
- Background Processes
- Output literals
- Commenting out code

This talk will include plenty of examples of useful BASH scripts to automate common database administration tasks. However, these concepts will be applicable to any aspect of system administration as well.

About the speaker:

Solomon Chang is MySQL certified, and works as a senior DBA for Ooyala. He is the former president of LAMPSIG and an evangelist of Open Source.

PRESENTATION DESCRIPTION

One of PHP5.3's terrific features is the ability to use lambdas. But, wait, didn't we already have that with PHP5? What was create_function() about after all? What is the difference between a lambda and a closure or is there any in PHP? Come and explore with me these and other questions in an adventure to discover the truth about lambdas in PHP. The presentation touches on the origins of the lambda and its implementation in PHP5.3. Far greater emphasis is on live code demonstrations of lambdas (and closures, too!) as well as in-depth discussion about the code.

ABOUT SHARON LEVY

Sharon is a Zend Certified Engineer in PHP5, equally comfortable working with UNIX, Linux or Windows platforms. Her accomplishments in public speaking include dynamic, multi-media presentations at code camps and PHP meetups. She has also presented at SCALE (WIOS) and was the local speaker representing the Los Angeles area at the 2009 Code Works conference. The premier magazine php|architect has published several of her articles whose subjects range from email verification to web-based retrieval, to her latest endeavor regarding PHP's support for lambdas. Writing and public speaking activities compliment her primary focus, providing professional web development services for companies in diverse industries, from startups to the Fortune 500.

By Solomon Chang

Python is an interpreted (as opposed to compiled) language created by Guido Van Rossum. Unlike most modern scripting languages, which can trace their heritage to C, Python has a number of unorthodox syntax idiosyncrasies, such as lines of code being terminated by newline characters (most of us are used to semicolons) and discrete blocks of code defined by indentation (most of us are used to putting them in curly braces). Despite these odd-seeming rules, Python is remarkably easy to learn, and flexible enough to accommodate anything between a quick and dirty service script to full blown object oriented projects.

This tutorial will focus on getting started with Python, with all the basics of any scripting language: I/O, loops, control structures. Any remaining time after that will be used for showing you how to do those things most people use a scripting language for: connecting to databases, sending out emails, requesting webpages, and other network operations.
Solomon is a fully certified MySQL DBA and former president of LAMPSIG. He uses Python in building a scalable storage engine for his current company. He spends too much time chasing after the latest geek toys.

About the Presentation:

We all know that Mobile Development is the big talk of the moment, but getting started brings more questions than answers. Questions such as: Where do you start? What platforms do you target? and/or Do you have to learn COCOA, JAVA, HTML5, CSS3 and all those technologies that you may not know much about?

The good news is that you can relax for now, because there is a new and exciting way to do all in simple ways. In this presentation you will learn the following in less than 120 minutes… Oh and actually be productive from day one:

How to design and build a single application that runs perfectly on: mobile web browsers, iPhone (native app), iPad(native app) and Android(native app).

How to test your application in IOS Simulator.

How to test your application in Android Simulator.

How to transfer your application to an actual iPhone and/or iPad.

How to transfer your application to an actual Android phone.
About the Speaker

Richard Howell has been creating software for many years, both as an independent consultant and as a captive software engineer for several technology companies, including MicroSim Corporation, OrCAD Inc., Cadence Design Systems and Panasonic Avionics Corporation. Throughout his career, Richard's interest in computer-aided design and development has focused on producing effective and practical application programs and tools.

Agile Development thrives in the PHP-powered web applications environment. By using smart tools to almost instantly create web applications that harnesses today's SQL databases, developers further their ability to quickly produce solutions, deploy them and then move on - crisply and cleanly. This scenario is the motivation for Richard's latest endeavor, a free open source software project named SynApp2 - Web Application Generator and MVC Framework. As a full time effort, Richard is continuing to build SynApp2 and spread the word.
