Topic: Introduction to programming cool things with the Arduino Microcontroller

Summary:

You may have heard about the popular Arduino board and may even have one collecting dust somewhere in the closet ... or not. Either way this talk will give you enough ammo to get started with the Arduino microcontroller, to the point that you'll find yourself moving to advanced projects in a very short amount of time. Are you terrified by hardware programming? Relax, Jorge Garifuna Jr, an eight year old, was able to create his first Arduino project with very basic understanding of programming. Whether you are a seasoned developer, a novice programmer or simply curious, this talk is for you.

Arduino is a single-board microcontroller designed to make the process of using electronics in multidisciplinary projects more accessible. The hardware consists of a simple open source hardware board designed around an 8-bit Atmel AVR microcontroller, though a new model has been designed around a 32-bit Atmel ARM. The software consists of a standard programming language compiler and a boot loader that executes on the microcontroller.

I hope you all had a great holiday!

As many of you may already know, SCALE 11x, is taking place on February 22-24 and as usual, we will have a booth. The booth will be shared by LAPHP, LA PhoneGap and LAMPsig.


We would like to use our LAMPsig meeting scheduled for this month of January to plan out our SCALE 11x strategy.


Please join us this Saturday, January 19th at 1PM, so we can have another successful SCALE year.

We will be discussing the project to present at SCALE, the volunteers needed and the distribution of the FREE SCALE tickets.

Extensible Cloud Computing (AKA EC2) provides a fast, easy way to provision (that is, rent) Amazon's hardware so that you have a fully functioning server with a public IP on the internet. It has proven invaluable for quickly setting up Linux box with the usual services, without dealing with the hassle of shopping for a rackmount computer, assembling it, and then haggling with a data center to house your new rackmount. With EC2, all the data center management responsibility lies with Amazon.

The EC2 Installfest will help you start an Amazon account, an provision and instance that belongs to you and you alone. Granted, it is not free, and you do need a credit card, but the instances start very cheap, at 8 cents an hour (approximately 56 dollars a month). You can put your website on this instance the very same day, or if you prefer to save money, you can delete them outright at the end of the installfest. Conversely, you can start provisioning more instances, if you decide to get serious and need to start clustering or sharding or replicating information...
